Keeping children safe is important to everyone and very young toddlers are especially at risk to everyday items in any home. Fortunately, protecting kids from the dangers present in an average home is easy today with all of the products on the market to child proof your home.
Dangerous Stairs
Put a gate across any open stairway when children under five are present in the house. If you have temporary guests like grandchildren in the home there are easy-to-install gates that require no hardware and simply use a brace across the middle to secure the gate against the railing and wall. The same gates can be used to block open doorways or rooms you don’t want little people in.
For more permanent protection when young children live full time in the house look for gates that attach on hinges. These are easier to open and close when you need to go through them and are also a firmer protection that is not at risk of slipping.
Plug Your Outlets
Electrical shock is dangerous to any human, but young bodies are at a much greater risk. The voltage from an electrical outlet can send a buzz through an adult but can easily kill a child. Use outlet plugs to cover any unused outlets where little fingers may stick toys or conductive objects.
Lock Your Cabinets
Nothing is cuter than a child who has gotten into the pots and pans and set up their own drum kit. Well it’s cute until the headache sets in. There are cabinets that are not so cute, though. Any space that contains medical supplies and drugs (both over the counter and prescription), cleaning fluids, sharp objects like knifes or breakable objects should be well locked.
Cabinet latches that are easy for an adult to open but impossible for young children are cheap and easy to install.
The Most Dangerous Room in the House
Bathrooms are well-known as the most dangerous rooms for many reasons but for small children they can be particularly deadly. Put latches on all cabinets in the bathroom. Install a baby safe latch on the toilet seat to prevent a child from falling in and drowning. Cover hot water faucets with an easy to clip on protector to keep children from turning on the hot water and burning themselves badly.
