In the world of real estate and landscaping, few features can add more lasting beauty than a live hedge. As well, borders can create the perfect impression for eager homebuyers, offering privacy and beauty.
There are two primary types of hedge, namely the privacy hedge and the border hedge:
• Privacy hedges are those selected for height and dense growth, resulting in an impenetrable barrier between the property and the streets and houses surrounding it.
• Border hedges come in several types. These have a primarily decorative purpose, though some types are meant to serve the same purpose as a picket fence. Border hedges may be free growing or regularly groomed, and can be nearly any type.
The dwarf burning bush is amongst the favorites for its hardiness (it grows in zones 4-9) and for its gorgeous foliage. These shrubs grow to as much as six feet tall, though trimming can keep them to a nice four-foot barrier. The leaves are a lush green in the warm months, but in the fall they turn to vibrant red.
Lavender bushes are attractive, cold hardy, and have fragrant purple blooms. These are attractive for their low maintenance requirements and ease of establishment.
Rosa Rugosa, or “wild rose” is an absolute favorite border hedge for flower lovers. These hedges are great by themselves or spilling over a fence, and are laden with brightly-colored blossoms. These shrubs grow to about four feet tall with dense foliage that makes them great for windbreakers.
The Chinese elm hedge can grow anywhere except in the extremes in the North and South and has amazing versatility. These plants can be allowed to tower as much as 50 feet, or they can be trimmed down into dense, well-packed 3-4ft. hedges.
Depending on where your real estate property is, the options for hedge shrubs are nearly endless. Some of the more temperate climates can support hundreds, if not thousands of shrub species. When selecting a hedge for an investment property the primary focus should be to find something that is attractive, low-maintenance, and very hardy.
